Renault Duster Return in India Anchors Brand’s Revival Plan

Renault is betting on the Duster return in India to rebuild a presence it lost during a long gap in new launches. In an interview with The Indian Express, Renault Group India CEO Stephane Deblaise said the plan goes beyond one SUV. It includes a hybrid-led comeback, more CNG options and a lineup of seven models by 2030.
The hybrid Duster uses a 1.8-litre engine. Deblaise said it is performing strongly in Europe, where only the hybrid is sold, and claimed its fuel efficiency beats rivals. He pointed to the Triber, a seven-seater at about Rs 6 lakh, as proof that Renault has more than one product. Renault now owns the manufacturing plant it bought from Nissan, and its India team of over 6,000 engineers is its second-largest engineering base after France.
Stephane Deblaise admitted the company lost ground. Between 2018 and 2023, the focus was Europe, and the lack of products explains why the second-generation Duster skipped India. He also said Renault will pursue “electrification by purpose”, covering hybrids, plug-in hybrids, range extenders and EVs, and will add CNG options for value-conscious buyers.
Deblaise’s message is that Indian buyers now weigh value more than a low sticker price, and rivals have filled the space Renault left. The Duster’s return in India is a test of whether a name made famous in 2012 can carry a product in a more mature market. The hybrid Duster targets buyers who still care about engine size and mileage. Stephane Deblaise also stressed that investment in people, technology and production matters as much as any single car.
Watch how the remaining models are rolled out to reach seven by 2030, and how many CNG options arrive. The key question is whether the hybrid Duster can win over buyers after the sluggish early traction the interviewer pointed out. Sales of the Duster return in India will show whether the strategy works.
