Asad Alam Siam Set to Become Bangladesh High Commissioner to India 

Asad Alam Siam, Bangladesh’s foreign secretary, is set to become the country’s next High Commissioner to India after New Delhi granted agrément for his nomination. The development clears a key diplomatic requirement for his proposed posting in New Delhi. 

The appointment of Asad Alam Siam as Bangladesh High Commissioner to India comes as Bangladesh prepares to change its senior diplomatic representation in India. Siam is currently serving as foreign secretary, a position he has held since June 2025. 

Siam is a career diplomat with several overseas assignments. Before becoming foreign secretary, he served as Bangladesh’s ambassador to the United States. His earlier diplomatic experience also includes postings in Austria, the Philippines and international organisations in Vienna. 

The Bangladesh High Commissioner to India position requires prior approval from the host country. Under diplomatic practice reflected in Article 4 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the sending state must obtain the receiving state’s agrément before formally accrediting a head of mission. 

The latest development follows reports from the previous week that New Delhi had not yet cleared Siam’s proposed appointment. Bangladesh had sought approval more than a month earlier, according to those reports. 

The Asad Alam Siam Bangladesh High Commissioner appointment places an experienced foreign-service official in line for a senior posting at a time when India-Bangladesh diplomatic engagement remains closely watched. 

Siam’s background includes work on bilateral relations, protocol and international diplomacy. His experience in Washington and other overseas missions gives him a long record of dealing with foreign governments and multilateral institutions. 

The change will also coincide with the expected departure of current High Commissioner M Riaz Hamidullah, who is expected to take up Bangladesh’s permanent representative role in Geneva around mid-October. 

The Bangladesh High Commissioner to India appointment will now move toward the formal diplomatic process following India’s clearance. Further details on the timing of Siam’s arrival in New Delhi and the presentation of his credentials are expected as the process progresses. 

For India and Bangladesh, the new envoy will become an important point of contact between the two governments as bilateral discussions continue across trade, connectivity, security and other areas.
