India Women’s Hockey Team Reaches Asian Games Final After 2-0 Win

India reached the Asian Games women’s hockey final after beating South Korea 2-0 in the semi-final on Wednesday, September 30. Ishika and captain Salima Tete scored in the second half after India went into the break without converting its nine penalty corners.

The India women’s hockey team’s Asian Games semi-final victory secured a place in the gold-medal match against China on October 2. India controlled much of the contest but had to wait until the 44th minute to break South Korea’s resistance.

India dominated possession and territory in the opening two quarters but struggled to turn its pressure into goals. South Korean goalkeeper Seoyeon Lee made several saves, while India missed nine penalty corners before half-time.

The breakthrough came in the 44th minute when Ishika finished a penalty-corner variation to put India ahead. Deepika’s variation sent the ball towards Ishika, who converted the chance and gave India a 1-0 lead.

Four minutes later, Salima Tete doubled India’s advantage. The captain made a run into the circle from the right, and the ball took a deflection off a South Korean defender before finding the net, with the goal awarded to Salima.

The result showed India’s ability to remain patient after failing to score during a dominant first half. Rather than allowing the missed chances to affect the team, India continued to press and eventually found the breakthrough after the interval.

The India hockey team’s Asian Games campaign has also featured an emphasis on speed and fitness. Salima Tete has previously described the squad as having multiple players with the pace and endurance needed to launch quick attacks and maintain pressure.

South Korea continued to look for a way back into the match late in the game, but India’s defence protected the two-goal advantage and kept a clean sheet. Hockey India said the team remained composed during the final stages to secure its place in the final.

India will face defending champions China in the Asian Games final on October 2. China reached the gold-medal match after beating Japan in a shoot-out following a goalless semi-final.

For the India women’s hockey team, the final provides an opportunity to compete for its second Asian Games women’s hockey gold. India’s previous title came in 1982 in New Delhi.
