Oral Pathologist with Purpose: Dr. Bhuvan Nagpal, The Name Behind The Movement

Dr.- Bhuvan-Nagpal

In the constantly evolving Indian healthcare environment, where obstacles vary from rural access to specialty care to regulatory and staffing concerns, few have had as broad and far-reaching an influence as Dr. Bhuvan Nagpal. Where medicine, education, legal reform, and business intersect, Dr. Nagpal is not only an oral pathology expert, but a diagnostic force for change throughout India.
What makes him stand out is not only his extensive clinical and academic expertise, but his capacity to translate that expertise in building systemic change. By weaving his diagnostic centers, associations, publications, and academic programs, Dr. Nagpal is bridging gaps—between legacy silos, between professions, and most significantly, between knowledge and action.

The Academic Passion That Lit a Mission

Dr. Nagpal began in the hallowed halls of Manav Rachna Dental College, where he completed his B.D.S. degree. He was no run-of-the-mill dental student; his performance—distinction in a whopping 13 out of 18 subjects—spoke of something greater: a desire to shine. He carried this forward by pursuing a Master’s in Oral Pathology and Microbiology from JSS University, Mysuru, into a specialty that doesn’t necessarily receive the spotlight but is at the heart of accurate diagnoses and early disease detection.
But whereas all his peers transitioned to clinical practice on their own, Dr. Nagpal’s path extended further. The hunger for learning pushed him beyond dentistry. He pursued degrees in Biochemistry, Healthcare Management, Medico-Legal Systems, Law, and a Ph.D. in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. This academic intensity gave him a very distinctive 360-degree perspective of the healthcare system—mixing science, administration, policy, and law.

From Practitioner to Pathbreaker

After completing postgraduate education, Dr. Nagpal’s next step was strategic and ambitious: he ventured into the medical diagnostic industry when large parts of India were waking up to the need for decentralized, high-quality laboratory facilities. At Manglam Diagnostics, and subsequently as co-owner and Lab Director at Tohana Manglam Diagnostics, he used his scholarly expertise to develop solid, technology-enabled diagnostic systems.
What sets his model apart is a preoccupation with clinical depth complemented by procedural perfection. From opening NABL-accredited labs in under-served areas to facilitating patient-friendly access to high-complexity diagnostics such as histopathology, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and molecular diagnostics, Dr. Nagpal has revolutionized diagnostics as not merely a support service but as the fulcrum of healthcare delivery. To most Haryanites and citizens of neighboring states, his name has become synonymous with quality, reliability, and humanity in diagnostics.

Raising Oral Pathology from the Margins

One of Dr. Nagpal’s most significant contributions has likely been his advocacy for oral pathology as a central part of contemporary diagnostics. Historically relegated to the periphery, Indian oral pathologists have fought for decades to establish a niche in the typical pathologist-controlled clinical laboratory. Dr. Nagpal has helped to make that a reality.
As the founder of the Practicing Oral Pathologists and Microbiologists Association (POPMA), he is spearheading a nation-wide movement to seek recognition for M.D.S. holders to sign medical lab reports—a change long overdue that could motivate thousands of qualified professionals.
He’s going beyond advocacy. His setting up the Academy of Oral Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (AOPLM) in Hisar provides on-site training courses for postgraduates with an aim to bridge the gap between academic concepts and diagnostic practice. With him at the helm, the academy has emerged as a center of skill building, mentoring, and specialization.

An Author, Educator, and Scientific Communicator

Dr. Nagpal is also a well-known author with more than 50 research articles, 15 textbooks, and publications in national and international journals. He has written comprehensively on oral cancer diagnosis, biochemical markers, and forensic odontology, among many others. His writing does not merely fill pages—it bridges gaps in the knowledge base that clinicians and students depend on.
What sets his work apart is its practicality. His research is frequently the product of the clinic—actual patients, actual issues—and his writing is a promise to resolve them. Whether it’s research on infectious disease markers among dental clinicians or advancements in histopathology methods, his work provides useful, usable information.
He is also a popular conference speaker and lecturer, having addressed over 150 scientific and clinical conferences throughout India. His talks have a reputation for being both technically sound and infused with a keen interest in public health and patient-centered care.

Entrepreneurship with Empathy

While the majority of healthcare professionals are at the crossroads of commerce and caring, Dr. Nagpal has found synergy. His entrepreneurial activities—particularly the diagnostics business—are mission-oriented with a vision of providing quality laboratory services at affordable prices in the semi-urban and rural markets.
Tohana Manglam Diagnostics’ success is a testament to his model: build locally, hire locally, and maintain world-class quality standards. The lab is now a community asset, not just treating patients, but also training professionals, supporting public health initiatives, and engaging in outreach.
He has also played a critical role in establishing satellite labs and franchise models across other cities so that diagnostic excellence does not reach metros only but wherever it is most needed.

Navigating the Legal and Policy Landscape

With an LL.B. to his credit, Dr. Nagpal has the unique combination of both medical and legal expertise—a synergy that has become increasingly crucial in a world where diagnostics and litigation often blur into one another. He’s an NABL-approved signatory for laboratory reports and works presently on quality management systems, accreditation procedures, and medico-legal awareness.
Through teaching other professionals the importance of legal compliance in pathology, report validity, and patient rights, he’s making the diagnostics future not only accurate—but accountable as well.

Driven by Vision, Guided by Excellence

Dr. Nagpal has received numerous awards for his clinical and leadership achievements. From outstanding oral pathologist to entrepreneurial success in healthcare, his achievements have been acknowledged within and beyond disciplines. But talk to him, and it’s apparent that recognition isn’t his aim. “My aim,” he frequently states, “is to create a diagnostic system in which expertise is respected, patients are involved, and oral pathology has the seat at the table that it’s been denied for so long.”

His vision is: Starting India’s first systematic post-MDS residency program in oral pathology. Scaling AOPLM up to a national training center. Developing AI-driven diagnostic products that combine machine effectiveness with expert validation. Creating policy templates for laboratory environments that will encourage compliance, ethics, and excellence. The Legacy in Motion What makes Dr. Bhuvan Nagpal’s story so lasting is that it’s still being written. Each lab he creates, each student he mentors, and each policy he advocates is a brush stroke in a much larger canvas. In an era when medicine often is impersonal, data-based, and frenetic, Dr. Nagpal is a humanist. His practice starts with the proposition that diagnostics is not simply about outcomes—it’s about accountability. Whether you are a patient who gets a life-altering report, a trainee at one of his workshops, or a policymaker who is shaped by his campaign, Dr. Nagpal makes his presence felt. Not as a doctor, or a pathologist, or an entrepreneur—but as a leader shaping the diagnostics of the future with clarity, courage, and compassion.
