Small Business Saturday to Light Up San Fernando Valley — Local Stores & Community Invite You

Small Business Saturday, the local effort to keep money in the community, takes a special place in the spotlight of the City of San Fernando and nearby Sylmar this holiday season. An outdoor shopping district from the past and a downtown mall area are the target of the event to the shoppers. To mark the very first Small Business Saturday hosted by the city, two businesses, a local electronics store and a casual burger joint, will be featured.
One of the businesses is a small electronics shop which, despite sluggish sales lately, is optimistic about regaining momentum when the event draws holiday crowds. The other is a well-known drive-thru burger spot just a few blocks from the mall. From the new MyValleyPass.com website launch to partnering with a popular Latin pop radio station to playing music and giving away free merchandise, the event partners are leaving no stone unturned for the hour between 1 and 3 p.m.
Besides these two shops, the Valley is also home to a creative market by the artists and makers nonprofit group. At the Hearts & Hands Mercadito in Sylmar, artisans will sell handmade jewellery, pottery, candles, floral crafts, graphic art, food, coffee, and more. The concept is to present something completely different from the typical Black Friday, which is mainly driven by sales and the noise of the crowd, and more personal, community-oriented, and supportive of local talent.
Small local shops have become the mainstays of community life for many families. This initiative is a reflection of that as it indirectly helps businesses stay afloat while giving shoppers the opportunity to buy gifts that really matter, i.e. unique, handmade, local. If big-box stores are not your thing, this will be the place to have a more relaxed, neighborhood-friendly holiday shopping vibe.
